Instructors
Head Coach, Sifu
Steve Hazell
Steve
first experienced martial arts in 1977 aged 7 through a local
judo class. In the early eighties he took up judo again for several
years. In the late eighties he trained in Judo and Ju Jitsu for
several years and in 1993 he began training in Wing Chun
Kung Fu under Master James Sinclair of the UK Wing Chun Association.
He remained with the association for eleven years and during this
time gained his “Sifu” title and coached students
to instructor level.
In
teaching martial arts, Steve has helped many students discover
some of the many benefits including: self-defence and self-discipline,
awareness of situations, improved physical health and self confidence,
improved body posture, stability, co-ordination and balance. He
feels through training in the fighting arts, people can become
less aggressive but also confident enough not to fight just to
protect a delicate ego, and if necessary, are well able to defend
themselves in self defence using a realistic and effective system.
He believes that the first lesson is always the hardest because
you know nothing, but after that it becomes a learning process,
which makes good sense, once you begin to grasp the theories and
principles. In 2003, Steve began training in the grappling arts to further develop his skills.
Steve is also a qualified Sports Therapist and Personal
Fitness Trainer, ensuring that training is safe and effective.
He is qualified in Swedish and Sports Massage and has studied
Chinese medicine and Shiatsu, an eastern therapeutic technique
of using pressure points and stretches to enhance well-being.
In addition to teaching classes, small groups and private martial
arts tuition, he can provide general diet and lifestyle advice
and is a qualified home-office approved instructor in
Unarmed Defence Tactics, Baton techniques and Quick Kuff, which
also includes Conflict Resolution.
He maintains that he will always remain a student of martial arts
himself, wanting to improve his own ability as much as possible
and therefore continues to train with martial arts experts in
specialist areas to further improve his abilities and experiences,
to share with his students.
Steve has been CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) police checked

Sifu Doug Creed
Doug is experienced in a variety of martial arts styles. His first martial art was Shotokan Karate, studied at a young age for 4 years. Later, he trained and successfully competed in Thai/Kick Boxing for a period of 2 years.
Doug has been training with Steve since 1996 and has put in many hours of hard work, effort and a consistent attendance, which has led him to become the first and deserving instructor to be awarded the title of Sifu by Steve.
Martial arts have always been much more than a hobby to him and are part of his life, a dedication no doubt which has led him to continue learning, testing and developing his skills; in 2004 he began studying the grappling arts which has led him to partake in competitions.
Doug runs Strood mixed ability class on Monday evenings. For class details click here.
