Introduction

Martial arts are becoming increasingly popular, appearing on TV, pop videos and films. Many people are interested in taking up a martial art. With the wide choice of systems available these days, it is up to an individual to research which art he or she aspires to and consider for what reasons e.g. self-defence, fitness, sport and competition or self-confidence.

Once a style is chosen, it is important to find an instructor who can teach well. It is sensible to find one who belongs to, or has come from, a reputable organisation (or teacher) with the correct attitude, skills and qualifications to teach. One style can also have many different interpretations, including Wing Chun, and you might visit a class and be unimpressed, but do not give up on the style immediately. You may have found a teacher or interpretation of the style that you dislike and may well find another teacher either in that organisation or a different one who greatly impresses you.
